The History
Before I left the teaching profession, I was fortunate enough to
have the opportunity of organising a Cricket Tour for a group of
Prep School boys to go to South Africa in 2006. It was
an invaluable experience for me, as I learned so much about the
organisation of school sports tours and how much work it takes to raise
the necessary money for the targets to be met enabling the
children to go on what was will always be a memorable and
very special experience for them.

Croft, Moody &
Smith: Three Old Oakhamians who played in the Guinness
Premiership Final in 2010.
Produced to help raise money for a school tour in 2011.
We organised the usual dinners,
auctions, car washes, cake sales, etc.. that all help to add to
the tour fund. The children all also went off to find personal
sponsors for the trip.
In order to buy the tour kit, I
put together a group caricature of the touring party (14 boys). Using a
set of photographs of the boys, I was able to produce a large
original painting of the boys faces and from that was able to
produce prints. The idea, which was very successful, was for each boy to sell ten A3 sized
prints to their family and friends, uncles, cousins, grandmas &
granddads. The boys sold the prints for £10 each and in so
doing, raised enough money to fund the cost of the tour kit,
which included playing shirts, t-shirts, caps, training kit & bags.
It was a great success, and I
would like now to offer the same service to any school or club
that is thinking of organising a sports tour.

The Ideas:
A Group Caricature of the touring party
to sell as prints or to auction off at a tour dinner.
A Group Caricature of the Staff on the touring party - they can
be drawn doing anything you like to gain that little bit of extra
interest..!!
Do you have an old boy or girl of your school who has gone on to
achieve great thins in their sport? Maybe you have
produced a string of successful sportsmen and women. Would a set
of caricatures of well-known sports stars from your school sell
as prints, or originals at a tour dinner auction? This works
really well especially if you can get the sporting personality
to sign the original for you to sell at a dinner.
Any artwork done is supplied in digital as well as original
format. The digital work can be used on invitations, marketing
or advertising of events.
T-shirt designs for your tour? Patrick Latham supplies the
Barmy
Army with designs for their touring T-shirts.
Maybe a cartoon of something that has happened in your season
would work better to sell as prints or at an auction? Maybe you
would just like a piece of artwork to commemorate a successful
team or season, or maybe a member of staff is leaving and a
caricature of them would be a great leaving present?

I want to do this!! What do I need to
do??
Your
Caricature: How does it work?
Below you will find an outline
of the services offered and details of how they can help you
and the organisation of your tour.
A
Group Caricature of a touring side
Depending on the number of
prints you sell and the price you decide upon, you can
potentially raise the cost of the team's tour kit, or
all the meals out on the tour, or all the donations to
charities at your destination. A group caricature can be
created in a few weeks and prints can be delivered along
with the original to your school.
The cost of a group caricature is dependent on the
number of tourists. Prices range from £300 for a small
group tour to £650 for large groups.
A
Single Caricature of Old Boy or Girl
Perhaps you have an old
boy or girl of the school who has gone on to reach the
top level in their sport? Why not commission a
caricature of them playing their sport, get them to sign
it and sell it at a dinner auction? A single caricature
can be commissioned for £100, which, if signed by the
sportsman/woman, can raise a large sum at auction.
T-Shirt Designs
Maybe you are heading off
on a skiing trip or pre-season training and you would
like a t-shirt designed to wear on the trip and as a
souvenir on return? Patrick Latham currently designs the
t-shirts for the Barmy Army tours to follow the England
Cricket Team. If you would like you own personal design
for your trip, please contact Patrick to discuss your
requirements.

What is needed to complete the artwork?
Typically, all that is
needed is a head and shoulders photo of each tourist
(the standard school photograph type) and a short
description about each of them covering their interests,
character, talents, etc. These details are required to
ensure that the caricatures do not only look like the
tourists, but also reflect their character further, to
make it a more personal piece of work.
This can all be done via
email, or alternatively, Patrick will come to see you to
discuss your commission in person.
How do I know that what I'm going to get is any good or
is what I want?
It is very important to me
that you get what you are hoping for. To ensure that you
are happy with the work, an initial sketch is produced.
At this time, the artwork is discussed and
alterations/additions/etc.. can be made to the design.
When you are happy with likeness and design the final
image is then produced, scanned and the original is
delivered to you along with the prints.
How many prints should I get?
There is no minimum order
on prints. Should you run out, you can order further
copies at any time. We will keep a scanned copy of the
original so even after the tour and after the original
has been auctioned off you can still come back and get
further prints from us if you need them. If you would
like the image sent electronically for use in marketing
and publicity then you can have this sent also.
The amount of prints you
get depends on how much you want to make and how
determined your tourists are to sell them to family and
friends. Typically, each tourist will sell between 10
and 20 prints to grandparents, uncles, aunts, friends,
etc.. so an initial order of around 10 per tourist is a
good reference point.

How much can this scheme raise for my tour?
The success of the
scheme depends on the price you set for the prints,
and how many are sold by the tourists. There is no
limit to how many you can sell, and no limit to the
price you wish to sell the prints for.
